Young Lund after dark

Tegnérs matsalar, inside AF-borgen, operates as a nightclub in the novel. Stella parks her bicycle here, drinks at the bar and first meets Chris. She and Amina return together on another evening.

This is one of the story's pivotal social spaces. It belongs to young Lund rather than to the professional worlds occupied by Stella's parents. To Stella, nightlife is part of independence. To Adam, it is a source of uncertainty and danger. To investigators, movements through bars and streets can become evidence.

The venue matters because relationships begin and competing interpretations take shape here. It should not be presented as the definitive beginning of the crime.

The oldest part of AF-borgen was built in 1851 to designs by H. J. Strömberg. It was sometimes called ynglingaborgen—roughly ‘the young men's castle.’
The original building included a dining hall, staff accommodation and Athén, whose upstairs journal room offered students periodicals and newly published books.
Helgo Zettervall proposed a grand mirrored extension facing the university, but it was never built. When expansion returned to the agenda in 1903, Fredrik Sundbärg's competing design won instead.
