Katedralskolan traces its foundation to King Canute IV's gift of 1085 and calls itself the oldest school in the Nordic countries. Its own history cheerfully admits that immediate opening is assumed ‘in the absence of evidence to the contrary.’
After roughly 750 years beside the cathedral, the school moved here in 1837 with 141 pupils—and accommodation for the headmaster in the same building.
Former pupils include actor Max von Sydow, Nobel Prize-winning pharmacologist Arvid Carlsson, Olympic golfer Henrik Stenson and the satirical writer Axel Wallengren, better known as Falstaff, fakir.
