We begin with clay, but without museum walls. Middelfart's Ceramics Trail links Nytorv, the pedestrian streets, KulturØen, the old town, harbour and CLAY through large-scale artworks and small glazed markers embedded in the paving.
The navigation system is called Clayfinding. Architect Michael Finke developed it using blue, green and yellow ceramic tiles made at Tommerup Ceramic Workshop. They work as modest wayfinding signs and as a reminder that even the route beneath your feet has been shaped and fired.
The trail continues to evolve. Monumental works and movable Middelfart Pots place ceramics in ordinary civic spaces, where weather, plants, traffic and chance encounters become part of the artwork. Let the tiles lead you away from the square and into the old town.
